Nigerians Hail Chief Magistrate Who Snubbed Rivers Sole Administrator (Photo)
By Gideon Ayeni

In a move that has sparked political ripples and raised eyebrows in Rivers State, Chief Magistrate Ejike King George has tendered his resignation, citing discomfort with what he termed a “quasi-military administration” now overseeing the state’s affairs.
The resignation, which was formally addressed to the Chief Judge of Rivers State and routed through the Judicial Service Commission, was dated April 11, 2025. In it, the respected legal officer did not mince words, describing his decision as “difficult and regrettable” — but necessary. His action has meanwhile been hailed by several sections of the polity with Nigerians going on social media to commend him.
George, who has served 16 of his 22 years in legal practice as a Magistrate, subtly but powerfully framed his exit as a principled stand. According to him, the current style of governance in Rivers State contradicts the very ideals of justice and the democratic values upheld by legal practitioners.
“My Lord will agree with me that this type of governance system is not only alien but also runs antithetical to our hallowed profession as legal practitioners and adjudicators,” he wrote.

While he did not directly name any political actors, the term “quasi-military administration” is already being interpreted by many observers as a veiled reference to the escalating tensions between Governor Sim Fubara and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike — a power struggle that has thrown the state’s leadership structure into confusion.
Netizens and legal observers have praised the judge’s bold stance, with some describing his resignation as a rare act of judicial integrity and silent protest.
