The world of football is in mourning following the tragic death of Gabonese international striker Aaron Boupendza, who reportedly fell from the 11th floor of his apartment building in China.

The 28-year-old Aaron Boupendza, who was playing for Chinese Super League side Zhejiang FC, died on Wednesday under circumstances that remain unclear.

The Gabon Football Federation (Fegafoot) confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement, describing Aaron Boupendza as a “talented and dynamic forward” who left an indelible mark on African football, especially with his performances during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon.

An official investigation has been launched by Chinese authorities to determine the cause of the fall, which has sparked shock and sorrow both in Gabon and across the global football community.

Born in Moanda, Gabon, Boupendza began his professional career at French Ligue 1 side Bordeaux before going on to play for several clubs around the world. He made headlines in Turkey with Hatayspor, where he finished as the top scorer in the Turkish Süper Lig during the 2020/2021 season. His career also saw successful stints at Al-Arabi in Qatar and clubs in Saudi Arabia before joining Zhejiang FC in January 2025.

Tributes have continued to pour in from fans, former teammates, and football administrators. Among those who expressed their condolences was Gabon’s president-elect, Brice Oligui Nguema, who hailed Boupendza as a national treasure taken too soon.

Aaron Boupendza earned over 30 caps for Gabon and was a vital part of the national team, often lining up alongside fellow star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. His flair, speed, and goal-scoring prowess made him a fan favorite and a key figure in Gabonese football’s golden generation.
