Ex-Man United Star Joe Thompson Dies
By Benjamin Abioye

Former footballer Joe Thompson has died at the age of 36 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
He passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family.
Joe was first diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in 2013. He beat it twice but faced the illness for a third time in April 2025. This time, it had reached stage four and had spread to his lungs. Despite his condition, he remained strong and hopeful throughout the fight.
He began his football journey in the Manchester United academy but spent most of his playing years at Rochdale, where he had three separate stints. The club expressed deep sorrow over his passing and remembered him not only as a talented player but also as someone who uplifted everyone around him.
“We first knew Joe as a talented footballer, but we soon came to cherish his loving and infectious personality. He approached every challenge with courage, both on and off the pitch, and his remarkable spirit has inspired countless individuals,” Rochdale said in a tribute. “Above all, Joe was a devoted husband to Chantelle and a fantastic father to Thailula and Athena Rae. Our thoughts and support extend to Joe’s family and friends during this difficult time.”
Joe’s most memorable moment on the pitch came in 2018 when he scored the goal that helped Rochdale stay in League One. He retired a year later, having made 203 appearances for the club, saying he had taken his body as far as it could go.
His wife, Chantelle, spoke about his incredible strength and the way he touched lives. “Joe has profoundly impacted so many lives, and we are eternally grateful for his presence and strength in overcoming the odds. He will be deeply missed, and the world will feel different without his vibrant energy.”
Beyond Rochdale, Joe also played for clubs like Tranmere Rovers, Carlisle United, Southport, and Bury. After retiring, he remained active in the football world as a pundit and dedicated his time to mentoring and motivational speaking.
