Kevin De Bruyne Manchester City Contract

Kevin De Bruyne has expressed his surprise over Manchester City’s decision not to offer him a new contract, revealing that he hadn’t been informed about the club’s intentions until it was too late.

The 33-year-old midfielder confirmed that he would leave City this summer when his contract expires, bringing an end to his ten-year stint at the club. Although it was a mutual agreement for him to depart, manager Pep Guardiola later clarified that it was a club decision, not De Bruyne’s own choice to leave.

“There was a little bit [of shock],” De Bruyne admitted. “I didn’t have any offer from them through the whole year and the club made a decision. Obviously, I was a bit surprised but I have to accept it.” Despite the shock, De Bruyne still believes he can perform at the highest level, but he understands that clubs sometimes have to make difficult decisions.

De Bruyne also shared that he was aware of the decision to part ways with him several days before it became public. “It was half a week until I reported it out and it wasn’t nice,” he explained. “My family weren’t home. They were on holiday so it was a bit weird but it is what it is.” Once the decision was made public, he felt a sense of relief, saying, “After the decision was made and when I came out, it was more of a relief when I reported it to the outside world compared to when I knew and nobody else knew.”

Although he has accepted the situation, De Bruyne also spoke about the emotional difficulty of handling the news. “You don’t know what to do with the emotion with everybody and how to handle it at the club,” he said. Now that the news is out, De Bruyne feels more at ease and is focused on continuing to perform for the team. “I love playing football so that’s it,” he added.

The decision to let De Bruyne go appears to be part of Manchester City’s plans to overhaul their squad. It’s been reported that his high salary of around £400,000 per week will now be used to bring in younger players, which could help the team compete for future titles. “It’s basically why they’ve made the decision – because the whole team has struggled,” De Bruyne said, reflecting on the team’s overall performance.

De Bruyne also mentioned that had City’s team performed better, they might have considered a different decision. “Maybe if the team didn’t struggle and I came back like I did this year and bedded in like normal then maybe they would take another decision,” he suggested. However, he acknowledged that the decision was ultimately a business one, saying, “I don’t feel like I want to share [the exact reasons for City’s decision] because it was basically more business-wise for them.”

Despite the decision, De Bruyne remains confident in his abilities. “I still think that I’m in good shape, I’ve played way more than I did last year except the hernia. I feel good and the rhythm is coming,” he said. While he may not fully understand the reasoning behind the decision, he has accepted it and is focused on moving forward.
