Wolves Punish Wasteful Manchester United With 1-0 Win
By Benjamin Abioye

Manchester United’s domestic woes continued on Sunday as they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford.
Manager Ruben Amorim rotated his side, opting to rest key players with the Europa League in mind, and a lack of quality throughout the match ended in heartbreak for the Red Devils when Pablo Sarabia netted a superb late free kick to secure all three points for Wolves.
The match began energetically, even if it lacked chances. The first notable effort came 22 minutes in with Nelson Semedo firing a wild long-range strike. United responded with a Christian Eriksen free kick eleven minutes later, which Wolves’ stand-in goalkeeper Daniel Bentley calmly tipped over.
United’s young wing-backs, Harry Amass and Patrick Dorgu, showed promise with dangerous crosses, though a lack of presence in the box left their efforts unrewarded. At halftime, both teams had barely tested the keepers, registering a combined 0.11 expected goals.
United pushed harder after the break, with Rasmus Hojlund nearly finishing off a smart Garnacho cross. Substitute Bruno Fernandes missed a golden chance with a wild slice from another Garnacho assist. Wolves then struck through Sarabia, who came off the bench to curl in a fantastic free kick, leaving Onana helpless.
Despite some late attempts, including a blazing miss from Mason Mount and a poor Fernandes free kick in stoppage time, United couldn’t respond.
United’s Youth Impress Despite Defeat
Amorim’s decision to field a youthful side saw 20-year-old centre-back Tyler Fredricson make his debut alongside 17-year-old Harry Amass. Both impressed, especially Amass, who was a persistent threat down the left and showed attacking intent. Fredricson, too, looked composed under pressure and handled Wolves’ advances with maturity.
Bentley Steps Up for Wolves
Daniel Bentley was a surprise inclusion in Wolves’ starting XI after Jose Sa suffered a last-minute injury. Despite his limited appearances this season, Bentley remained calm throughout and made key decisions, especially when cutting off a potential Hojlund chance from a tricky backpass. United did little to truly test him, but Bentley delivered when needed.
Cunha Auditions in Front of Future Employers?
Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, reportedly on Manchester United’s radar, had a decent if not spectacular performance. He showed flashes of his dribbling and passing ability, causing occasional problems for United’s defence. While not game-changing, his performance demonstrated potential that could make him a viable option for a top-tier side.
Formations Cancel Each Other Out
Both teams set up in a 3-4-2-1 formation, which led to a tactical deadlock. With neither side able to create overloads or exploit gaps, clear chances were rare. Amorim’s system may still be in its developmental stage at United, but the lack of opportunities reflected a need for more creative solutions. In the end, Sarabia’s dead-ball brilliance proved to be the only difference.
Wolves walked away with a deserved three points thanks to Sarabia’s moment of magic, while Manchester United were left ruing missed chances and a lack of cutting edge. With eyes now firmly on European competition, the Red Devils will hope their young talents continue to develop and make a difference on bigger stages.
