World’s Most Followed TikTok Star Detained, Released In US
By Benjamin Abioye

Khaby Lame, the world’s most-followed TikToker, was detained by U.S. immigration officials in Las Vegas for overstaying his visa and has now departed voluntarily.
Italian TikTok star Khaby Lame, known for having the highest number of followers on the platform, was recently detained by US immigration officials for overstaying his visa.
The 25-year-old social media personality, whose real name is Seringe Khabane Lame, was stopped at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas on June 6.
According to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Lame had entered the United States on April 30 but remained beyond the allowed period under his visa terms. He was detained briefly and then allowed to leave the country voluntarily. ICE stated, “US Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained Seringe Khabane Lame, 25, a citizen of Italy, June 6, at the Harry Reid International Airport, Las Vegas, Nevada for immigration violations.” The agency added, “He has since departed the US.”
Lame, who has over 162 million followers on TikTok and is also a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, had not publicly commented on the situation by Saturday afternoon.
He gained popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic with his silent reaction videos that poke fun at overly complicated “life hacks.” His signature style — a calm look with hands raised in disbelief — quickly became his trademark.
Lame’s success has been significant. After losing his job as a factory worker in 2020 in Chivasso, near Turin, Italy, he turned to TikTok. His content quickly gained traction, and he reportedly earned around \$16.5 million between mid-2022 and late 2023 through brand deals.
His story, from unemployment to social media stardom, has made him a global icon — and now, briefly, a subject of US immigration enforcement.
