Iyanya revealed he didn’t appear in the first season of Nigerian Idol despite passing auditions as he was writing his final year exams.

Nigerian singer Iyanya has revealed why he couldn’t take part in the first season of Nigerian Idol, even though he passed the audition stage.

He said he auditioned in Calabar, Cross River State, and only two people were selected from that location — himself and fellow artist Omawumi.

However, Iyanya explained that he had to withdraw from the competition because of a major academic commitment.

“I couldn’t make it. I had my final year exam,” he said.

Although he missed that opportunity, Iyanya’s music journey didn’t stop there. The following year, he entered and won the first edition of Project Fame West Africa.

Reflecting on how far he’s come, Iyanya shared that he and Omawumi, who went on to become the first runner-up on Nigerian Idol, are now both serving as judges on the current season of the show.

“Omawumi and I were the only ones picked at the Calabar Nigerian Idol auditions… A year later, I won Project Fame. Today, we’re both judges on Nigerian Idol,” he added.
