Newly promoted side Fulham produced a superb display in their first Premier League game of the 2022/23 campaign as they shared the spoils at Craven Cottage, forcing last season’s runners-up Liverpool to a 2-2 draw.

The champions of English Football Championship in the 2021/22 season returned to Premier League football after dominating the second division in grand style and they showed no signs of slowing down as they began the new campaign with zest and poise, piling on the pressure on the visitors. Their purposeful start yielded positive result, as last season’s Championship golden boot winner Aleksandr Mitrovic opened his goalscoring account in the Premier League with a bullet header to send Fulham into the lead at halftime.

Liverpool who were a shadow of themselves in the opening 45 minutes were rejuvenated against Fulham by  the introduction of new signing Darwin Nunez who scored his first Premier League goal on his debut after just 13 minutes coming off the bench. The Uruguayan slotted home with a flick after receiving a pass from Mo Salah. Virgil Van Dijk then put his side in a precarious position as his mistimed tackle on Mitrovic was deemed a spot kick.

The Serbian then converted to make it a brace and put his side 2-1 ahead. Mohamed Salah salvaged a point for Jurgen Klopp’s men with an 80th minute equaliser as Liverpool were held to a frustrating opening day draw. Here are takeaways as Liverpool drew 2-2 with Fulham;

• Aleksandr Mitrovic has scored 45 goals in 45 league matches since the start of last season, 15 more than any other player in England’s top four tiers.

• Liverpool have with the match at Fulham ended a run of 51 Premier League matches without giving away a penalty, which was the longest ongoing run in the competition. Virgil Van Dijk also conceded a penalty in the competition for the first time since October 2018 against Manchester City.

• Darwin Nunez is only the third player to score and assist from the bench on his Premier League debut Sergio Aguero (2011-12) and Alvaro Morata (2017-18).

• Mo Salah has now scored in six consecutive opening day fixtures of a new Premier League season and is now the only player to achieve that feat in the competition’s history.

• No player has scored more goals on the opening weekend of a Premier League season than Mohamed Salah
