Wike G5 lose

The Governor Nyesom Wike led G5 alliance suffered another loss on Wednesday when Governor Okeize Ikpeazu, one of the governors that had followed Wike around the world in the feisty political spectacle in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP failed to push through his anointed successor.

The defeat of the PDP and its candidate, Okey Ahiwe, immediate past chief of staff to Governor Ikpeazu marked the first time that a ruling party in the state would lose to an opposition party.

The defeat of the PDP in Abia came after the governor was trounced in his bid for the Abia South Senate seat, coming a distant third in the election that was won by Senator Enyinninya Abaribe.

Just like Ikpeazu, other G5 compatriots who contested for the Senate in their respective states were also defeated. Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi lost in his bid in Enugu North while Samuel Ortom who had won elections on both the PDP and APC platforms was also defeated in his bid for the Senate seat in Benue.

Governor Ortom also suffered a second loss with the defeat of the PDP governorship candidate in the state, Titus Uba.

In Enugu, the PDP is also fighting for survival with the party and Labour Party engaged in dispute over the validity of votes from Nkanu East Local Government Area which are being disputed.

The only silver lining for the G5 came from the leader of the group, Wike who was able to browbeat the opposition in the state to push through all PDP candidates in the federal and state elections with the notable exception of the presidential where the party came third after APC and Labour. However, the conduct of the elections in the state has been trailed with much violence and disputations.

Governor Seyi Makinde also survived an initial scare to a resounding victory in his re-election seat after the PDP lost all three of the Senate seats on February 25 and won only four of the eight House of Representatives seat.

The loss of Abia by the PDP is bound to increase agony not just among the G5 governors, but also among the G5 especially given the spectacle that shadowed the outings of the Wike led group within and outside the country.
