Edo 2024: Battle For APC Ticket Spreads To Three Senatorial Zones
Former Peoples Democratic Party, PDP governorship aspirant in Edo State, Engr Gideon Ikhine has formally defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC setting the stage for a battle among the three senatorial zones for the party’s 2024 ticket.
Obaseki is from Edo South and there is agitation from Ikhine’s Edo Central Senatorial Zone to produce a governor for the state. The only governor to have emerged from the area, Senator Osehreinmen Osunbor served only 18 months in office as his tenure was overturned by the courts leading to the emergence of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole from Edo North who served for eight years.
Following Oshiomhole, the baton was returned to Edo South through Obaseki.
GWG.ng reports that Ikhine had earlier been reported to have dumped the PDP on account of allegations that Governor Obaseki was planning to push through a successor from his Edo South.
However, the governorship aspirant has now clarified his position saying that more than that, that the anarchy in the PDP would not allow him to realise his aspiration.
Ikhine was quoted as saying thus:
“The impasse in the PDP was a major factor for my exit because I don’t feel I can realise my ambition in the state with the Obaseki and the legacy group still at loggerheads. I am taking 30 per cent of the membership of the PDP with me to APC.”
GWG.ng reports that with the defection of Ikhine to the APC that the battle line is now drawn among the three senatorial zones. It is commonly alleged that Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and Senator Matthew Urhoghide both from Edo South and Prince Clems Agba from Edo North represent the major contenders for the APC’s governorship ticket in 2024.
