Taraba: Seven Arrested At Quartz Mining Site
No fewer than seven illegal miners have been arrested by the Taraba State Special Taskforce (STF) Committee on illegal mining at a Quartz mining site in the state.
The STF led by its Chairman, Gen. Jeremiah Faransa (rtd) raided Abuja-Leather where the mineral deposit is being explored.
The camp of the miners was also set ablaze as a warning to those still in the illegal trade.
Ibrahim Zuppai, Spokesman of the Taraba Committee in a statement, said the miners arrested would be arraigned before a special mobile court for prosecution.
He also listed those arrested to include, “Kamal A. Yusuf, aged 33, from Shagarda ARD; Sirajo Adamu, aged 51, from Kaduna State; Ibrahim Hassan, aged 35, from Gayam; Shehu Usman, aged 42, from Gombe State; Saidu Aliyu, aged 42, from Bauchi State; Yusuf Abdulkarim, aged 36, from Donnada, Lau LGA; and Adeka’a Nathaniel, aged 32, from Gazabu, Bali LGA.”
The Chairman of the STF, Gen. Jeremiah Faransa (rtd) also said the STF’s action will send a strong warning to those still opposing the state governor’s directive on the prohibition of illegal mining.
On June 30, 2023, Taraba state governor constituted the STF with members drawn from the Nigerian Army, Police, NSCDC, Immigration, and DSS.
They were mandated to enforce executive orders number three and five issued by the state governor to curtail the excesses of deforestation and mining activities in the state.
The statement by Zuppai says, “Despite the sensitization across the sixteen local governments of the state, the lackadaisical behavior of illegal miners is worrisome.
“The STF Chairman, Gen. Jeremiah Aliyu Faransa (rtd), said it has become imperative for the STF to set ablaze the notorious mining site considering the fact that stern warning was made to them during the special task force sensitization tour to the area last year,” he said of the miners arrested by the Taraba committee.
