MTN Airtel Q1 2022

Nigeria’s major telecommunications companies, including Glo, MTN, Airtel, and 9Mobile, have urged the federal government to facilitate a constructive dialogue to address pressing issues in the industry and notably, a hike in tariff rates.

In a joint statement by the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) and Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), the telcos highlighted the need for a pricing framework that balances consumer affordability with operator financial viability.

The telcos pointed out that the current price control mechanism has not been reviewed in 11 years, despite economic hardships, due to regulatory constraints. This has threatened the industry’s sustainability and may erode investor confidence.

They emphasized the importance of a general service pricing framework that considers economic realities.

Additionally, the telcos expressed concerns about worsening security challenges affecting their services. They urged the government to prioritize the security of telecommunications infrastructure and collaborate with law enforcement agencies to combat vandalism, sabotage, and attacks on critical assets. The industry requires substantial investments in network expansion, maintenance, and technology upgrades.

ALTON Chairman, Mr. Gbenga Adebayo, and ATCON President, Mr. Tony Emoekpere, signed the statement, which emphasized the need for urgent government intervention to address these challenges and ensure the industry’s continued growth and contribution to Nigeria’s socioeconomic development.
