Outrage As FG Realigns Lagos-Calabar Highway After Demolitions Because Of Submarine Cables
An outrage has been sparked on social media after the Federal Government of Nigeria announced its decision to disembark from the proposed controversial Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, amid previous demolitions that affected the beachfront of private businesses, including LandMark beach.
GWG.ng reports the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, disclosed this at the 3rd Stakeholders Meeting in Lagos, where he confirmed that the proposed diversion would no longer occur due to the submarine cables along the coastline.
He also announced that the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) would not be available for now, citing Section 15 (b) of the Freedom of Information Act to support the government’s decision to withhold certain information from the press and public.
Recall that on April 29, a section of Landmark Beach on Victoria Island, Lagos, was demolished to make room for the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Nigeria’s largest public infrastructure project so far.
On April 30, the CEO of Landmark Beach Paul Onwuanibe, took to his X account to respond to the demolition of parts of his property for the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project.
He had lamented that six years of investment was destroyed in just six hours. Paul however, appreciated the public for showing concern.
On Friday heartbroken Nigerians took to their X accounts to express their displeasure on how the federal government disembarked on a project that cost the landmark CEO a huge loss.Â
See some reactions below:
@bigwig_austin cried, “This breaks my heart. These people were just out to destroy Landmark Beach. The moment they achieved that they gave a flimsy excuse to discontinue the road. All those that supported that evil are you guys not ashamed now?”
Odogwu called out Umahi ,”So after destroying LandMark Beach worth billions of dollars in investment, the Federal Government has now disembarked on the Calabar Highway Realignment Due To Submarine Cables. Kai, Kai, I’ve never seen this type of wickedness, Dave Umahi
“Dave Umahi came to media and accused Peter Obi of making the Lagos-Calabar Highway Realignment a tribal thing after Peter Obi spoke up on the demolishment of the Landmark beach.
“Today, the same Dave Umahi is saying they can’t continue because of Submarine Cables!!!! God, this one pain me, so this man’s business was destroyed for NOTHING!!!!”
IGBO History & Facts lamented, “We grieve with business mogul, Paul Onwuanibe whose multimillion-dollar Landmark beach resort properties were demolished in Lagos. The pain runs deep and unexplainable, yet within it lies a brave heart. To upcoming landlords, learn from this sad event and apply wisdom.”
@Gidi_Traffic said,
“Tinubu is demolishing Landmark, Good beach, Sol, Oniru beach just to construct a road that could have ended in Epe, this people dont have us at heart, what a government. This businesses generate billions of naira, all the tourist attractions in lagos gone, Bar beach gone.”
