Bayo Onanuga to Peter Obi on

The Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Bayo Onanuga has come under fire for a statement posted on his X platform that was seen as an attack on Peter Obi at the time the country is mourning victims of the Jos School building collapse.

This controversy arose following the federal government’s approval of local government autonomy, as discussed by Bayo Onanuga. In his statement, he questioned Peter Obi’s silence regarding the Supreme Court ruling granting financial autonomy to Nigeria’s 774 local councils.

In the attack on Obi, Bayo Onanuga said the opposition leader was in the habit of often spreading unverified news about the Tinubu administration and the country, emphasizing that a responsible opposition leader should acknowledge commendable actions by political opponents.

Onanuga praised Tinubu’s administration for revitalizing local councils through legal measures, noting what he described as ‘even Atiku Abubakar’s reluctant acknowledgment.’

His post read:

”Why is Peter Obi silent?
More than 36 hours after the Supreme Court gave a landmark ruling, granting financial autonomy to Nigeria’s 774 local councils, Mr. Peter Obi, the defeated Labour Party candidate, has yet to utter a word on the epochal judgment. His silence confirms the belief that he is always quick to tweet unverified news about the Tinubu administration or our country. A good opposition statesman must be candid enough to applaud his political opponent when he has done some great deed. The Tinubu administration has succeeded in giving life back to our emasculated councils, using the instrumentality of the law. Even Atiku Abubakar has grudgingly admitted this. But Peter has been silent. He should break his silence and acknowledge that President Tinubu is making a great Nigeria possible.”

However, the post drew significant backlash in the comment section, with many criticizing him for targeting Peter Obi.

Responses showed disapproval and sarcasm, warning the adviser he might embarrass himself and might need to delete the post later “as usual”.

These reactions reflected different opinions, questioning whether it was the right time to make political statements during national tragedies and calling for more respectful discussions in public.

Below are some reactions gathered by GWG.ng:
