By Ayodele Oluwafemi
The speculations surrounding the source of wealth of Malaysian-based socialite and Instagram celebrity, Raymond Igbalodely, fondly called Ray Hushpuppi were again ignited on Wednesday, when the reports of his arrest appeared on the social media.
GWG reported the mixed reactions that trailed the reports of his arrest by INTERPOL, for alleged fraud-related offences.
The name, Hushpuppi, may not be an unknown name to many Nigerians, especially those who follow celebrities.
Hushpuppi usually posts pictures of expensive drinks, flashy cars, flamboyant designer clothes, and luxurious tourist centres in his Instagram post, a situation that has set tongues wagging on his source of wealth.
Even though he has in the past claimed to be a real estate agent, a claim that has been rejected by many Nigerians who argued that those who make their money as estate agents do not throw money the way Hushpuppi does.
There were online reports that Hushpuppi spent over N11 million in a popular nightclub in Nigeria.
Despite the ignorance surrounding his source of wealth, his fans remained unmoved in their loyalty. His love for motivational quotes obviously serves as a form of encouragement to those who are influenced by his flamboyant lifestyle.
At some point, many Nigerians thought he was a brand ambassador to GUCCI, due to his public display of GUCCI products.
His flamboyant lifestyle has pitched him in confrontational manner to some Nigerian music artistes like Phyno and Ice Prince
In 2017, the Gucci lover called out Phyno for supposedly wearing a fake Patek Philippe’s watch (a Swiss watch manufacturer), saying that Phyno should not complain when people pirate his works.
The Gucci lover was tongue lashed for his action by many Nigerians. Phyno also hit back at Hushpuppi, noting that he would not engage in public display of wealth while his poor neighbours languish in poverty.
As his fame grew on social media, Hushpuppi there were many Nigerians who called on the anti-graft agencies to investigate the source of wealth of the Malaysian-based Nigerian.
His arrest now by INTERPOL may have further widened the insinuations of his source of wealth.
