Court Remands Lawyer Over ‘Forged’ Will Of Deceased Client

A lawyer, Olusegun Agunloye, from Ondo State, has been remanded in custody over allegations of forging the will of his deceased client, Benjamin Chibuzor Ejelonu. The case, which has sparked significant interest in legal circles, was brought before the Akure Chief Magistrates’ Court.

Agunloye faces two charges: conspiracy and forgery. He is accused of manipulating documents to create a false will, supposedly reflecting Ejelonu’s final wishes. The alleged forgery took place on September 7, 2023.

According to police prosecutor Nelson Akintimehin, Agunloye reportedly collaborated with Ejelonu’s sister, Aminat Ijeoma Bakare, in crafting the forged will. Bakare, who is 72, is already on trial for her involvement in the case. The fake will was allegedly filed at the Probate Registry of the Ondo State High Court in Akure.

Charged under Sections 516 and 467(2)(f) of the Criminal Code Law of Ondo State, 2006, Agunloye has entered a plea of not guilty.

During court proceedings, Agunloye’s defense attorney, Kehinde Osadugbe, applied for bail, contending that the alleged offense was committed in the course of his client’s professional duties. The prosecution opposed the bail, citing Agunloye’s past failure to comply with administrative bail conditions, raising concerns about him being a flight risk.

Magistrate Kolawole Aro eventually granted bail at N2,000,000, with two sureties of the same amount. The case has been adjourned to September 26 for further hearings and consolidation of the charges.
