70-Year-Old Shoots Youth

A 70-year-old man, Mr. Stephen Irobunda, narrowly escaped being lynched by angry youths in Ohokobe Ndume, Umuahia North LGA of Abia State. Irobunda allegedly shot and killed a young man, Mr. Bright Odizuru, during a dispute with local youths on Saturday.

The conflict reportedly began when Odizuru and other youths were playing football near Irobunda’s residence, which agitated the older man. Community members explained that Irobunda initially fired a warning shot into the air, seemingly to scare the youths away from his property. The young men, concerned by the gunshot, went to Irobunda’s house to confront him and understand his actions.

In response, Irobunda allegedly drew his gun once more, this time aiming at the youths, and fired, hitting Odizuru in the abdomen. Odizuru was rushed to the hospital but, sadly, did not survive the injury.

News of the young man’s death incensed the local youths, who immediately retaliated, attempting to attack Irobunda. However, security forces arrived on time to save him from being lynched. The youths, still outraged, also tried to set his house on fire but were restrained by the authorities.

A spokesperson for the Abia State Police Command, ASP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the incident, stating, “The police have such reports, the crime scene has been visited, and an investigation is ongoing at SCID.”
