Full Breakdown: Latest Cooking Gas Prices
The price of cooking gas, or Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), in Nigeria has seen significant changes, affecting households across Nigeria as at December, 2024.
As of December 3, 2024, the price of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder with cooking gas has risen to around ₦17,000, marking a 41.6% increase from ₦12,000 in July 2024 as it obtained in Nigeria.
Looking at the price trends throughout the year, the cost of a 5kg cylinder was ₦4,600.57 in February 2023. By May 2024, the price for the same 5kg refill had increased to ₦7,418.45, which was a 70.12% rise compared to the previous year. In October 2024, the price of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder climbed to ₦16,734.55, reflecting a 58.68% increase from October 2023.
Prices of cooking gas in Nigeria vary depending on the region due to factors such as transportation costs and local demand. In the North-East, Borno State had the highest average price for a 5kg refill, priced at ₦7,939.29. Meanwhile, the North-West had the lowest average price for the same refill in Katsina State, at ₦6,270.00.
Several factors are contributing to the price instability of cooking gas within Nigeria. Despite having abundant natural gas reserves, Nigeria’s limited domestic processing capacity means that imports are required to meet demand, leading to fluctuating prices.
Global market changes, such as international energy price fluctuations, also affect LPG costs locally. Additionally, the depreciation of the Nigerian naira increases the cost of imported LPG and related equipment, further pushing up prices for consumers.
Infrastructure challenges, such as inadequate storage and distribution systems, result in supply issues that affect availability and pricing across the country. The government’s policies, including the recent removal of petrol subsidies and the devaluation of the naira, have raised transportation and operational costs, which also influence LPG prices.
In an attempt to stabilize domestic supply, the Nigerian government imposed an export ban on LPG. However, this measure has not yet led to a significant decrease in prices, as ongoing market challenges and supply chain issues continue to push prices higher.
