Mayor Shot Dead Three Others

The mayor of Tancanhuitz, a municipality in Mexico’s San Luis Potosi state, Jesus Eduardo Franco, was killed on Sunday along with three others.

Local authorities reported that the victims were found dead inside a vehicle, but details of the attack are still under investigation.

Franco was a member of Mexico’s ruling Morena party. Rita Rodriguez, the party’s president, mourned his death and condemned the violence. “We deeply regret the death of our colleague Eduardo Franco, municipal president of Tancanhuitz,” she wrote on X (formerly Twitter). She also urged authorities to ensure justice by identifying and prosecuting those responsible.

This assassination is part of a troubling wave of attacks on local officials in Mexico, often linked to organized crime. Just last month, Alejandro Arcos, a mayor in Guerrero state, was brutally killed and decapitated shortly after taking office. His severed head was left on a pickup truck, causing national outrage.

Mexico has struggled with widespread violence since 2006, when the military was first deployed to combat drug cartels. Since then, over 450,000 people have been murdered, and thousands remain missing, according to official records.
