Tragedy struck on New Year’s Day in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, as a South African woman, Phindiswa Toshi Mpomposhe, was brutally stabbed to death by her boyfriend, Mkhuseli Ludidi, following an argument over her choice of bum shorts as a form of dressing.
According to a statement from the advocacy group Women For Change, Phindiswa had gone to the beach with her sister, friends, and Ludidi to celebrate the New Year. During the outing, she borrowed a pair of bum shorts from her sister, a decision that sparked outrage from her boyfriend, who considered the outfit too revealing. Unknown to Phindiswa that she would be stabbed to death later in the day.
Although witnesses claimed the couple appeared to resolve their disagreement, the horror unfolded later when they returned home. In a fit of rage, Ludidi fatally stabbed Phindiswa to death.
“It is alleged that the incident stemmed from an argument between the couple, reportedly sparked by Phindiswa’s choice of clothing and socialising with friends during a New Year’s celebration,” Women For Change stated.
Friends recounted that after the initial argument, the group resumed their festivities, unaware of the impending tragedy. Hours later, police contacted Phindiswa’s family with devastating news.
Authorities reported that Ludidi arrived at the Harare police station in Khayelitsha, covered in blood, and claimed someone had been injured. However, he fled before providing any further information, prompting a police chase.
