Nigerian football legend and former Super Eagles coach, Christian Chukwu, has passed away at the age of 74.

The sad news broke on Saturday, though the exact cause of his death remains unknown as of the time of filing this report.

Chukwu, fondly called “Chairman” by fans and colleagues, was a towering figure in Nigerian football history. He served both as a celebrated player and as a coach, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the sport.

This is not the first time news of Chukwu’s death has surfaced. In 2021, false reports of his demise made the rounds on social media, prompting the football icon to clear the air during his 70th birthday celebration on January 4 of that year.

At the time, a visibly shaken Chukwu said:

“I am terribly embarrassed with this news that I am dead. Several people have been calling me from across the world since the news broke. I am still investigating the source of the story.”

Christian Chukwu’s contributions to Nigerian football span decades — from captaining the Green Eagles (now Super Eagles) to victory in the 1980 African Cup of Nations, to managing the national team during various international campaigns.

Tributes have begun pouring in from fans, former teammates, and football authorities, all mourning the loss of a national icon.

Further details surrounding his passing and funeral arrangements will be shared as they become available.
