Hushpuppi Transfer Stirs Fake News Of Release
By Ayodele Oluwafemi
The purported release of Ramon Olorunwa aka Hushpuppi, the Nigerian Instagram celebrity from the USA prison has raised several questions on the social media.
Hushpuppi, who was arrested by the Dubai Police, last month for allegedly defrauding over one million persons in a series of coordinated cyber fraud and subsequent extradited to the United States, where he is currently facing trial for alleged cyber fraud.
The self-acclaimed brand influencer and real estate agent was said to have been detained at the Metropolitan Correctional Centre in Chicago, in the wake of his trial in the United States.
However, on Wednesday, the Nigerian social media space was thrown into a state of confusion, when a report emerged that Hushpuppi had been released from Chicago prisons.
Screenshots showing Hushpuppi’s details on the website of FBI’s Bureau of Prison showed that he was released from prison on July 20.
The development raised several questions on the rationale behind the release of the alleged fraudster, despite court documents showing fraud-related charges against him.
Reacting to the report, Gal Pissetzky, Hushpuppi’s legal representative, in an interview with Punch Newspaper, disclosed that Hushpuppi has not been released, saying that he was only transferred to California ahead of the continuation of his trial.
Many Nigerians took to the microblogging platform to react to the purported release and transfer of Hushpuppi.
