Crashed Helicopter Was 2 Minutes From Destination
By Chuks Ekpeneru
The Quorum Aviation operated helicopter that crashed on Salvation Road, Opebi, Ikeja, Lagos State, on Friday was just two minutes from reaching its destination at the Murtala Mohammed Airport before it crashed killing two of its three passengers.
A third occupant of the aircraft was confirmed dead later on Friday.
Two air traffic controllers who monitored the aircraft revealed the time trajectory of the helicopter to Saturday Punch.
The source said, “The helicopter is a Bell 206. The crew did not report any form of distress except that the pilot at some point requested to know if there was rain on the field. He was informed negative at the time. It was unfortunate that the helicopter came down just about two minutes to landing at the airport.”
The claim was corroborated by another air traffic controller at the Radar Section of the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency, NAMA who disclosed that there was no report of any issue filed by the helicopter crew before the crash.
“It is sad for the aviation industry. The aircraft could not make it to the airport even though it was just about two minutes to landing.”
