Global Stars Join #EndSARS Campaign

The #EndSARS protest has gained momentum, as international celebrities like John Boyega, Trey Songz, Estelle, Chance the rapper and Sean Don have lent their voices to the call of Nigerian youths for an end to police brutality perpetrated by the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) a unit of the police force.

On Friday, the hashtag #EndSARS topped the list of worldwide trends on twitter as the online campaign against police brutality and the call for the disbandment of SARS was intensified by many people around the globe.

In the past three days, several parts of the country have witnessed massive street protests organized by Nigerian youths, calling for an end to the police force SARS unit, notorious for harassment, victimization and extortion of innocent youths, and in some cases, murder of innocent citizens.

In Lagos, protesters kept vigil at the Lagos State House of Assembly, for two consecutive days, sleeping on bare floor and grasses at the front of the assembly complex.

Nigerian celebrities like Falz, Small Doctor, Runtown, Tiwa Savage, and  Jaywon also joined the street protest in Lagos, calling for the disbandment of SARS, before reforming the entire police force.

Reacting to the online #EndSARS protest, British-Nigerian actor, John Boyega, in a series of tweets, on Friday, said Nigerian youths deserve good leadership and guidance, while calling on the Nigerian Government to change the situation.

Boyega wrote, “The youth in Nigeria deserve good leadership and guidance. This situation is tied to many other issues. Please lend your attention to this pressing problem! #EndSARSImmediately #EndSarsProtests #EndSARS #EndSARSProtest.

“We can’t simply enjoy Banana island every December without noticing the concrete wall placed between Nigerians and their potential. The limitations become unbearable for them and this needs serious attention. #EndSARSProtest.

“Three years ago Nigeria’s police chief re-organised SARS after public condemnation about the violence that came with their operations. That change has done nothing for Nigerians and today many are still in danger. #EndSarsProtests.”

American singer, Treny Songz also joined in the online campaign for the disbandment of SARS.

American rapper, Big Sean also joined the fray of celebrities that lent their voices.
