Nigerians Humour 45-Year-Old New NANS President
By Emmanuel Adigwe
At a time many are championing for youths to take over politics with the “Not Too Young To Run” bill, Nigerians have been awed with the emergence of a 45-year old civil-servant, Sunday Asefon, president of the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS).
GWG notes that the student body conducted its election on Thursday and it was characterised by violence as media reports stated that some persons were injured from gunshots and machetes.
However, normalcy returned and the students completed the election and Asefon got 155 votes to defeat his closest rival, Olushola Oladoja, who scored 100 votes.
Asefon will now replace Bamidele Akpan.
However, his emergence has sparked wave of reactions as many felt that at a time when the youths are campaigning for greater participation in the political affairs of Nigeria, that it was improper for a 45-year-old man to be the president of a body that is predominantly youth based.
Many social media users took to the micro-blogging platform, twitter to express their views concerning the issue and GWG brings some of them:
