PDP Appoints Screening Panel For Anambra
Wada, Uzamere In Screening Panel
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) has appointed former Governor Idris Wada of Kogi as Chairman of the Screening Committee for its aspirants in upcoming Anambra governorship election and Senator Ehigie Uzamere among others as members.
The party disclosed this in a statement issued by its National Organising Secretary, retired Col. Austin Akobundu, in Abuja on Saturday.
Akobundu said that the party also approved the nomination of South East Zonal Secretary of the party, Chief James Ugwu, as Secretary of the screening committee.
Other members of the committee according to Akobundu include: Senator Ehigie Uzamere, who was the first man from Edo South senatorial district to serve two consecutive terms in the Senate, Mrs Martha Bodunrin and Mr Jones Onyereri.
He said that the screening exercise is scheduled for Monday April 12, and Tuesday April 13, at the National Working Committee Hall, Wadata Plaza, Abuja, at 9:00 a.m.
“It is expected that the aspirants will exercise exemplary conduct and strict adherence to rules and regulations during the assessment that will justify the confidence reposed in them by the leadership of our party,” he said.
The announcement of the screening committee is set to further put the PDP on its toes in its plans to win back the governorship in Anambra State.
Though about the dominant party in Anambra State, the PDP has not won the governorship election since after its first victory in 1999. The party’s 2003 victory through Dr. Chris Ngige was annulled by the court in 2006 which returned Mr. Peter Obi on the ticket of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.
Since then, APGA has won three consecutive governorship elections with Peter Obi winning re-election in 2010, Willie Obiano in 2013 and again in 2017.
Ironically, Peter Obi through whom the party was entrenched in the state has now switched to the PDP.
