Nollywood Stars Picket Radisson Blu
Leading Nollywood stars including Jide Kosoko, Fred Amata, Yemi Solade and Mahmood Alli-Balogun were spotted at a non-violent protest at the Radisson Blu Hotel situated on Isaac John Street, Ikeja, GRA, The Nation has reported.
Other movie stars spotted at the protest instigated by the Audio-visual Rights Society (AVRS) are Yinka Akanbi, Grace Amah, Ejike Asiegbu and Sunny McDon as well as movie producers and directors.
AVRS boss, Alli-Balogun, said the hospitality outfit has refused to pay for use of their intelligent properties in their different branches.
He further said negotiations with the management of the hospitality outfit has met brick walls, leading to the protest.
Alli-Balogun also alleged the hospitality outfit is owing the copyright collective society to the tune of N50 million.
The picketing of Radisson Blu came with the revelation that the number of Nollywood films in the last quarter took a giant leap.
The number of movies produced by Nollywood in the second quarter of 2021 jumped to 635 from 416 in the first quarter, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), said in a report.
NBS published the figure on Wednesday, September 9, 2021 in its “Nollywood Movies Production Data for Quarter Two, 2021” on its website.
According to the publication, the figure indicates a growth of 53.93 per cent Quarter on Quarter and a 1.44 per cent Year on Year growth over the 626 movies produced in the second quarter of 2020.
In its analysis by location, it said that Lagos State had the highest number of movies produced with 234 closely followed by Abuja with 196 movies and Onitsha with 174 movies.
However, Jos had nine, Kano six, while Benin and Port-Harcourt recorded the least with seven movies each.
The bureau said that in arriving at the figures, data was provided by the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), verified and validated by NBS.
