The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC on Tuesday night dismissed opposition by the Clement Ebri led panel on the Governorship primaries and declared Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu winner of the gubernatorial primary that took place earlier in the day.
The chairman of the state chapter, Alhaji Tunde Balogun said Sanwo-Olu defeated Governor Akinwunmi Ambode by 970,851 votes to 72,901.
Mr. Ebri following observations of procedural lapses had declared the primary conducted by the Lagos State chapter as void and announced that another primary would hold on Wednesday.
But dismissing the assertion of Mr. Ebri, Balogun at a late night press conference at the party secretariat on Tuesday night while thanking members for pouring out to participate in the exercise said:
“They did this with enthusiasm and dedication. To be clear, an APC primary election was held in Lagos and this was in accordance with the party constitution.
“In pursuant to the constitution, it was stated that the primary would be conducted in direct open system where each voters would queue behind their preferred candidate.
“In pursuant to the constitution, it was decided that the primary would be conducted in direct open system where each voter would queue behind his or her preferred candidate
“Not only is this method approved by the party rules, but it is the option that is most favoured by our members and by those who favoured transparency and openness. This method was used during the presidential primaries.
“To embark upon any other course would be to betray our members, our state And the core principles of progress and democracy upon which the APC is founded. Such a move is also at variance with the President’s strictly adherence to the principles of transparency, openness and participatory democracy.”
