Rivers APC Considers Options After Supreme Court Judgment
Leaders of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Rivers State were yesterday under pressure and weighing their options after the Supreme Court ruled the party out of contention in the National Assembly and all state level elections in the state during the General Election.
The Supreme Court decision made it that the party would not present a candidate to contest against Governor Nyesom Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the governorship election due next month.
The immediate past governor of the state, Rotimi Amaechi who is the leader of the party in the state had been in a vengeful war with Wike following their falling apart in 2013. Wike forced himself to power with the instrumentality of the federal might in 2015 and Amaechi according to sources was set to get his own pound of flesh in the election by applying the same federal might now at his behest.
Among the options for the governorship reportedly being weighed yesterday is Mr. Dumo Lulu-Briggs, candidate of Accord.
The Supreme Court Friday upheld the rulings of the Court of Appeal and the Rivers State High Court which stopped the APC from presenting candidates for the election upon issues from the primaries and the congresses earlier organized.
The Amaechi led tendency had produced Mr. Tonye Cole as its governorship candidate while the Senator Magnus Abe led faction produced himself as the candidate leading to vicious court battle that culminated in Friday’s decision.
