The uncle and close friend Christabel Buoro, the 300 level student of the University of Benin who committed suicide earlier this week have given insights into what led a once vivacious and brilliant lady to take her life.

It also emerged that Buoro who was raped in 2018 earlier tried to take her life by swallowing 24 tablets of paracetamol. That suicide attempt failed as she was resuscitated at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. Both have strongly rebuffed claims that she took her life on account of a failed relationship as it was claimed that she had never had a boyfriend.

The lifeless body of Christabel Buoro was found in her hostel apartment at Plot 4 Uwaifo lane, Newton Street, Ekosodin, last Tuesday, after reportedly taken the deadly substance, sniper.

She was said to have locked herself indoor and disconnected all her means of communication while leaving behind a note before committing the suicide act.

The note, she left behind, read thus:

“Folakemi Ruth Julius! I don’t believe you are happy. True love bring joy and peace. You are trying to be happy, but I don’t believe you. End it real. Joy is contagious.

“Angela Owoicho, babe, I want you to stop. And you know what I am talking about. You have so much  potentials, you are ruining your life with it. I love you, so don’t forget.”

Ms. Julius, her best friend to whom part of the suicide note was addressed has now elaborated on what her friend meant debunking insinuations that she took her life on account of a failed romantic relationship.

In a message circulated in a WhatsApp group of the 300-Level Med Lab students, she said:

“In loving memory of Christabel Buoro. My name is Julius Folakemi Ruth, Christabel’s supposed best friend to whom she wrote her and who supposedly made her commit suicide. Christabel was a best friend, I have known her for three years and I don’t think I would ever have such an understanding friend. She was the only one that cooked beans I could eat, her gbebiri was the best I have and will ever taste. And we stayed together for most of the times she was in school.

“I wrote this broadcast to clear the air on the reasons why my bestie took her life. I have seen broadcast and reports on different false reasons for which she took her life. She was depressed although known to many as carrying a smiling face, she thought and spoke about a life free of pain. She went through a lot and we all went through it together, both I and her other friends.

“Debunking the rumours, please she never died because of a man and she did not die because of unsettled differences with the two names she mentioned, In her note she enjoined me to take decisions that would make me happy. Her last words to me was ” joy is contagious”, she wanted everyone around me happy and wanted a better life for us all. She was a writer and wrote very intelligently, only a few persons would understand the note so I understand the misconception of what was in the letter. She didn’t even mention any body’s name in the letter apart from her sister and I. Her last words to her sister was “I love you”. ”

One, Ben Bamiyi, who identified himself as Christabel’s uncle stated that the deceased was raped in 2018 and that it had affected her psychological and emotional wellbeing.

He further disclosed that the deceased, once attempted suicide by taking 24 tablets of paracetamol but she was taken to University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH,  for recovery as friends and course mates had been providing emotional assistance after the rape experience.

“She had never had a boyfriend in her entire life, Christabel was exceptionally brilliant.” Her Uncle noted.

However, the Public Relations Officer, Edo State Police Command, DSP Chidi Uwabuzor, when contacted noted that the operatives of Ugbowo Police Division were notified of the incident and had evaluated the corpse.

“Investigators said the suicide note was incoherent. professionals will examine the body to ascertain whether she was a psychiatric patient.” DSP Nwabuzor stated
