Actor turned politician, Desmond Elliot has called for the ban on the importation of foreign films in the same way the importation of foreign rice is prohibited.
Elliot who is a two term member of the Lagos State House of Assembly made this known in an interview with HipTv.
Giving his prescription on how the industry can grow, he said:
“First they need to create an enabling environment for this industry to thrive.
“Second, they need to consciously, intentionally focus on building the industry. Treat it like you’re importing rice, you know you ban all foreign content, you now make it difficult for foreign content come in so your local content can grow.
“And then you need to support the music industry, you need to support the film industry you need to support, even the comedy sessions as well.
“You must be ready to treat this industry like rice and other goods you’re bringing into this country.
“Entertainment is the greatest product this country of 200 million people can ever have,” he said.
“We’re asking for an enabling environment, we’re asking for empowerment, make sure you make billionaires from us. We have the Tyler Perrys, yes, we can make them.
“People cannot invest because they are not sure of getting returns, so government must be able to make guarantees. Don’t ask me how, we can do it,” he said.
