2023: Presidency Must Go To South, Only Mad Persons Will Oppose – Sagay

Presidential aide and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Prof. Itse Sagay has dismissed the mutterings against the transfer of presidential power to a Southerner in 2023 as the expression of mentally retarded persons who are desirous of causing the breakdown of the country.

Affirming that the country’s presidential system of government was founded on power rotation between north and south, Sagay who is also chairman of the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) in an interview with Daily Independent said:

“No rational mind will say things like that. Only an ethnic jingoist or a person who is mentally retarded and who does not have the interest of the country at heart will utter such a statement.

“No sane person will talk in such an irresponsible manner. The mode of exercise of power and choice of presidency has been established. Every eight years, it moves from the North to the South and from the South to the North, depending on which region was in power at the particular time.

“If anyone thinks he can change that, then that person does not consider the future of Nigeria. The country cannot survive any idea of one group of people in the North or South saying they will remain in power permanently without respecting the rotation rule.”

“For you to achieve political power in Nigeria, you must either be in APC or PDP; because political parties gain strength sometimes, others become weak while others cease to exist; but as at today in Nigeria, if you want power in Nigeria especially at the level of the presidency.

“I have no doubt in my mind that the APC is going to nominate a Southerner as presidential candidate in 2023. I know that for sure. I don’t know where the PDP presidential candidate will come from but APC will nominate a Southerner. I suspect PDP will nominate a Southerner too because by 2023, a northerner would have been in power for eight years. So, the PDP too will nominate a Southerner. I want to see that Northerner who will try to overthrow that arrangement in 2023 and think that this country will survive it.”
