Onitsha Military Cantonment was agog on Tuesday as the Commander Brig. Gen. Yakubu Bwala, was decorated with his new rank following his promotion from the rank of a Colonel.

He was decorated by the General Officer Commanding, 82 Division Nigerian Army, Maj Gen. Lasisi Adegboye, GOC 82 Division Nigerian Army Enugu.

When the news of the decoration of Brig. Gen Bwala filtered into town residents of Onitsha who had been following his track record since he assumed duty in the commercial city described the promotion as a welcome development.

They also commended the Chief of General Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Burutai for approving the promotion of Bwala from Col. to Brig. Gen.

According to Dr. Anthony Okoro, one of the people that reacted to the promotion, “Brig. Gen. Bwala deserves his promotion, since he assumed duty in Onitsha, the commercial city has known peace and the civil military relationship has greatly improved, just as Army discipline has also risen in Onitsha.

“The Army in Onitsha has been involved in medical outreach to residents of the state and just last Saturday, the Army in Onitsha embarked on environmental sanitation that opened up blocked drainages in the commercial city of Onitsha. That was coming after we understood they offered free medical service to the people of Inyaba, Otolo Nnewi in Nnewi North Local Government Area of the state. In fact, I must give kudos to Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Buritai and the Commander for the peace Onitsha has recorded in recent time.

It will be recalled that officers and soldiers of the Onitsha Military Cantonment, on Saturday embarked on environmental sanitation exercise that saw them opening drainages along Nkpor Old Road, Onitsha that had been blocked for about ten years.

The environmental sanitation exercise by the Army in Onitsha, had also led them opening up a blocked drainage at Electrical International Market Obosi, and another at Park Road, opposite Onitsha.

The clean-up exercise was personally supervised by the Commander of the 302 Artillery Regiment, (General Support) Brig. Gen Bwala, who was then a Col. having not been decorated as at Saturday.

Addressing the troops during the exercise the Commander, said that “Anambra State is our host State and Onitsha is our host community and therefore, we have a duty to ensure the peoples security, and welfare through making their environment clean.”

“The clean-up exercise is also part of Exercise Atulogwu Udo 1, that recently kicked off in the state, in which free medical service of the Army Medical Outreach team is giving to people at Inyaba community, Umudim Nnewi, Anambra State.”
