Communication Minister Wants Synergy With Private Sector To Boost Digital Economy

The Minister of Communications, Dr Isa Pantami has called for workable synergy with the Organized Private Sector to drive the roadmap to produce a digital economy in Nigeria.

He spoke at a conference on digital economy organized by his ministry in Kano.

Pantami, who was represented by the Director, Human Resources of the Ministry, El-Baff Mahdi, stated this during the North West zone Sensitization exercise, with theme:” The Role of the Public and Private Sectors in the Implementation of the Nigeria ICT Roadmap for Digital Economy”.

He stated that the crucial interaction, represents a new vista, in the country’s collective drive to evolve a workable synergy, so as to reposition the country towards a digital economy.

”To move the initiative further, we are conducting sensitization exercise across the six geo-political zones of the country to have stakeholders buy-in. So far, we have held the exercise in the South West and the South East zones.

”It is in a bid to facilitate the impactful adoption, adaptation and utilization of ICT for Nigeria’s socio-economic benefit. We initiated ICT Roadmap for the period 2017-2020, which the Federal Executive Council approved the implementation in June 2017.”

In his own remarks, the Guest Lecturer, Mr Najib Ali Marshal, identified challenges, which include funding mechanism, policy, legal and regulatory framework, local content, as well as Industry and infrastructure, adding that,  if resolved will fast track the digital economy roadmap.

”The local content, especially will enable us own the technology and reduce dependency on foreign technologies that mightq disappoint us in moments of industrial disagreement.”

A participant, Dr Obi Igwelu, of the National Space Research and Development Agency, said the sensitization is in tune with global roadmap to digital economy.

However, he urged  for the upgrade of school curriculum, that will help children at Primary and Secondary Schools to become interested in Mathematics that will ease computer programming knowledge.
