The Oba of Benin, Uku Akpolokpolo, has called on Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State to review the splitting of the Kano emirate.

The Benin monarch made the call when he accompanied the emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi on a visit to the governor.

While noting the history of the Kano emirate, the visiting Benin monarch said:

“It is in the light of the above that I strongly counsel and advice that whatever must have instigated the recent splitting of the Kano Emirate should be treated with utmost care, maturity and the wisdom that our forefathers applied in handling matters of this nature” he stated.

“My dear governor I have an inkling of the issue that allegedly led to your decision to split the old Kano Emirate into five.

“May I on behalf of myself and all my brother traditional rulers plead with you and implore you to please remember  that, even if we believe we have been offended leaders are always expected to tamper justice with mercy.

“May I counsel and advice that the issue should be approached with a lot of care, maturity and wisdom in order not to erode the time tested tradition and cultural values of our people” the Oba said.

He nevertheless expressed satisfaction on the cordiality between the governor and the emir saying:

“When we sat there waiting for this hall to be arranged, the very close rapport that I saw between Your Excellency and His Royal Highness is evident that they don’t show any sign of conflict ever existed in Kano.

“I said to myself, so I have just been reading a lot of things as the media will put it for benefit of selling their papers” he stated.

Governor Ganduje did not respond to the Oba’s supplication saying rather that he would collaborate with the traditional institution to advance the welfare of the citizenry.

“I listened to your rich speech  with keen interest and attention and I am happy you among others commented on the role of traditional rulers in nation building. Inclusiveness of traditional rulers in governance is being given high priority in Kano. Particularly when you are talking of those parameters that are indispensable for human development, that is education and health services” the governor stated.

Emir Sanusi who had been on a war path with the governor used the opportunity to congratulate the governor on his Supreme Court victory.

“Before I invite His Majesty to deliver his speech since this is the first visit I’m making to Government House since the Supreme Court victory of the governor, let me use this opportunity, on behalf myself and the Emirate Council to congratulate you and your government, congratulations.

“I have listened carefully to your acceptance speech and your call to the people of Kano to unify and I will add my voice to that call for unity.”
