Arresting Beggars Will Not End North’s Poverty – Shehu Sani

Senator Shehu Sani has said that the arrest of beggars in the northern part of the country cannot put an end to the menace if the contributing factors are not addressed.

Sani, a former senator who represented Kaduna Central, argued that laws cannot solve the problems of acute poverty and begging syndrome, prevailing in the North, which according to him, was occasioned by the political leaders of the region.

His reaction could be connected with the moves by some Northern governors, precisely Kaduna, Kano and Nassarawa state, to place a ban on street begging scheme, popularly known as Almajiri.

In his words, “Begging in the Northern part of Nigeria is a direct result of poverty, neglect, social, cultural and religious factors combined.

“The Northern political leaders should understand that it is impossible to compose a paradise without beggars in a hell they created over the years. Beggars are tragic victims and direct result of a nation failed by its successive governing elites. You can’t end begging without ending poverty and illiteracy.

“You can arrest beggars but you can’t end begging as long as the social, cultural, political and economic factors that contribute to begging exists.”
