Members of Elele-Uzairue Community in Etsako west local government area of Edo have called on the Edo State Government to rename Edo University, Iyamho after Elele-Uzairue as the school is located on their land.

The community made their position known during a protest to Edo State House of Assembly Complex in Benin City on Wednesday.

Spokesperson of the community, Mr Sylvanus Oniakhena, said, the state government under former governor Adams Oshiomhole took part of Elele-Uzairue land for the construction of the school without due recognition of the community.

Oniakhena said, “we are here to demand that the University be renamed after Elele-Uzairue or remove the structures on their land.”

He explained that the visit was for the lawmakers to intervene in the matter as the ancestral inheritance of the community was lost by the naming of the school after Iyamho.

Responding on behalf of the Speaker, Mr Francis Okiye, the Deputy Speaker of the house, Mr Yekini Idaiye, urged the group to forward their petition for consideration by the house during plenary.

Idaiye said, “l want to assure you on behalf of Mr Speaker that the house will look into the petition as soon as we reconvene after the recess.”
