A medical researcher identified as Bing Liu, who was said to be on the “verge of making very significant” findings in understanding coronavirus has been found dead, in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, CNN reported.

Bing Liu, 37, a researcher at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine was found dead with gunshots in his head and neck inside an apartment in Ross Township, Pittsburgh, U.S.A, police told CNN.

Police also saw the dead body of another man identified as Hao Gu, 46, in his car, less than a mile where Liu’s body was discovered, it was believed that Gu could have killed Liu before returning to his car to take his own life.

Local police detective, Brian Kohlhepp, said both men knew each other, and there are suspicions that Gu killed Liu before returning to his car, saying investigations are going on to ascertain the issue.

Mr. Liu earned Ph.D. in computational science from the National University of Singapore and worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Carnegie Mellon University before becoming a research associate at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

The university in a statement issued described Liu as “a prolific researcher and admired colleague at Pitt.”

“Bing was on the verge of making very significant findings toward understanding the cellular mechanisms that underlie SARS-CoV-2 infection and the cellular basis of the following complications,” the university said.
