176 New COVID-19 Cases, Oyo Leaps 3,100%

176 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded in Nigeria on Saturday, May 16 in 14 states of the country and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC reported late on Saturday.

The additional cases brought the total number of confirmed cases reported in the country since the advent of the pandemic to 5,621.

Five deaths were reported which brought the total number of fatalities to 176.

Oyo State had the biggest daily jump in new cases as it jumped from zero the previous day to 31, recording the highest daily percentage increase of 3,100%. 

The NCDC in its daily tweet of the development in the country on  the pandemic said:

Meanwhile, the agency has strongly rebutted claims that prolonged use of face masks can cause damage to healthy individuals.

Responding to a social media trend that prolonged use of face masks limits oxygen supply to the brain, the NCDC in a tweet countered the claim saying that it was a wrong narration as it said that there was no danger to persons above two years wearing protective masks.

“The information circulating on social media that prolonged use of face masks by healthy people may cause death, is FALSE,” the agency said.

“Face masks can be safely used by healthy persons over the age of 2 years

“Please DO NOT remove your mask in public spaces. This can lead to spread of #COVID19.”
