The appointment of Anthony Kan Onwordi, popularly called Toni Kan, a fierce critic of President Muhammadu Buhari as the spokesperson to Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq has been met with strong opposition by some members of the All Progressive Congress, APC.

Toni Kan is a public relations expert and former Editor, Nigeria Monthly Magazine, who had criticized many of the policies of the Buhari administration. He is also remembered as an editor of one of Nigeria’s most successful magazines, Hints, the romance inclined monthly that once shook the landscape in the nineties.

Why Buhari’s Appointees Fight Among Themselves

Following his appointment as the spokesperson of Sadiya, some APC supporters dug out screenshots of write-ups written by Toni Kan that were critical of Buhari and some key chieftains of APC.

Many of the APC members have taken to the microblogging platform, Twitter to reject the appointment of who they perceived as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

This is not the first time, a section of APC members would reject the appointment of a Buhari critic into prominent positions in government.

In 2019, the appointment of Seun Onigbinde, Co-founder of BudgIT as Technical Adviser to Ministry of Budget and National Planning, was greeted with calls for rejection by a section of APC members, a development that led to his resignation.

Dr. Festus Adedayo was also forced to step down as Special Adviser to Senate President Ahmad Lawan after APC activists launched a crusade against his appointment last year.

In like manner, online assault has continued to trail the appointment of Toni Kan, on Twitter, with some APC members relating the trend of leaking memos to the appointment of PDP members into the Buhari-led administration.

An ultimatum of 48 hours has been issued to the new appointee to resign, by some APC members.
