Yet again, Barcelona’s dazzling superstar achieved an incredible feat of 700 career goals with a cheeky Panenka penalty goal against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.

The Argentine becomes the seventh player to find the net 700 times after Josef Bican, Romario, Pele, Ferenc Puskas, Gerd Muller and his rival Cristiano Ronaldo who currently has 725 goals in 1002 appearances.

Lionel Messi has now scored 700 in 860 matches for Barcelona and Argentina. Be that as it may, he is also the all-time top scorer for both club and country with 630 for the Catalan giants and 70 for the Argentine national team.

Nonetheless, more goals are expected from the clinical goal scorer, in his bid to dethrone Czech-Austrian idol Josef Bican as the King Of Goals. An astonishing 805 goals in a 30-year-old football career put the Czechoslovakian top of the all-time goal-scoring chart.

The Panenka

The Panenka is a technique used in penalty kick-taking in which the taker, instead of kicking the ball to the left or right of the goalkeeper, gives a subtle touch underneath the ball, causing it to rise and fall within the centre of the goal, deceiving the goalkeeper who is counted on by the taker to have guessed a side and committed a dive away from the centre.

It was first used by Czech player Antonín Panenka, who presented this technique to the world in the 1976 UEFA European Championship final, when he beat West German goalkeeper Sepp Maier to claim the title for the Czechoslovakian national team.

After its sensational debut in the tournament, the Panenka kick has been used on rare occasions and mostly by highly respected players who can deal with the consequences of missing such an attempt.
