Dead Katsina Children Struggled Over Grenade They Thought Was A Toy

A total of eight people have been reported dead following the accidental explosion of an alleged military-grade grenade.

The explosion occurred near a poultry farm on the farmland located at the outskirt of Yammama, Malunfashi Local Goverment in Katsina State.

It was gathered that seven of the children were of the same father, Mallam Adamu Yammama.

Eyewitnesses said the children, who had gone to the farm to collect grass for their animals, picked an object suspected to be an abandoned hand grenade They were said to have dragged over it until the object suddenly blew off.

According to them, the children had removed the safety pin on the grenade, triggering the explosion leading to the instant death of six of them while the others died at the hospital.

Residents of the area confirmed that they heard sound of a loud explosion which sent fear into the village, causing many to rush to the scene.

It was also gathered that a woman who saw the children struggling with the explosive had told them to drop it but they not heed to her advice.

Locals who narrated the incident said they arrived the scene to meet mangled dead bodies of six of the children and others with gory injuries.

Six of the children were buried around 6:30pm at the community’s cemetery while one body was being awaited from the hospital while four survivors are receiving treatment at the hospital.

It was speculated that the hand grenade could have been dropped by security agents or bandits operating in parts of the state.

The spokesman of the Katsina police command, SP Gambo Isah, however disclosed that preliminary investigation revealed that the explosion was caused by a military grenade.

Also, an aide to the Governor of the state, Aminu Bello Masari on social media, Mohammed Garba revealed that the total number of death were eight.
