Ghana Mourns As JJ Rawlings Dies At 73

Jerry John Rawlings, three time leader of Ghana has died at 73 from complications associated to COVID-19 it was reported on Thursday.

Rawlings first came to prominence when he led a failed coup in 1979. He came out of detention, however, to claim power and governed for a brief period before returning to the barracks.

He reemerged in 1981 to take over power and ruled as a military dictator before organizing elections in which he won in 1992. He served for two democratic terms before handing over in 2000.

He died on Thursday morning from COVID-19 complications at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, Ghana.
