Army Reacts As 18 Generals Test Positive For COVID-19

Nigerian army denies reports of recruiting Boko Haram

Officials of the Nigeria Center for Disease Control, NCDC have requested recent senior army officers present at the recent Chief of Army Officers Staff annual conference to quarantine themselves.

The directive follows confirmation that 18 generals at the conference tested positive for Coronaviurs .

The officers are to quarantined themselves along with their spouses and close family members sources privy to the development told Channels Television.

All 18 officers who tested positive were said to have been attendees at the COAS Annual Conference. They were said to have had either direct or indirect contact with Major General Olu Irefin who died from COVID-19 complications last week.

General Irefin who was the GOC 6th Brigade was also said to have visited the homes of some of his colleagues at home before he attended the conference.

Channels Television disclosed that the affected army officers were mostly those who came from outside Abuja and have been tested by officials of the NCDC.

It was as such feared at the weekend that the numbers could rise as more tests are conducted on generals based in Abuja.

It was also reported that the Nigerian Army Resource Centre in Asokoro, Abuja which was the venue of the aborted conference has been decontaminated by health officials.

Major General Irefin fell ill during the 2020 Chief of Army Staff Conference last week and died following confirmation of that he had tested positive for Coronavirus.
