Man To Pay Ex-Wife N10m For 5 Years Housework
By Chuks Ekpeneru
A Chinese court has ordered a man to pay thousands of dollars in compensation to his former wife for housework she shouldered during their five-year marriage.
The former wife, Wang, a homemaker, demanded restitution equivalent to $24,700 (about N10m) from her husband saying she “sorted the kid and managed family chores, whereas (her husband) Chen didn’t care about or take part in some other family affairs moreover going to work”.
She said the husband who sought divorce in a Beijing court “barely cared about or participated in any kind of domestic chores,” the state-run China National Radio (CNR) reported.
In its ruling, the court ordered the husband to pay Wang around $7,700 as “housework compensation,” after splitting their joint property equally. Wang was also awarded custody of their son and $300 per month in alimony, according to CNR.
The court decision has sparked a heated debate in China, as the man has been told he must pay his former spouse 50,000 yuan (£5,460) for five years of unpaid labour.
It comes after a new civil code came into force in the country that seeks to better protect the rights of individuals.
The legislation allows people to appeal for compensation from their partners in a divorce if they have shouldered more responsibilities – including housework.
She was reluctant at first, but later requested financial compensation and division of property, on that grounds that her ex had not taken on any housework or childcare responsibility of their son.
The new law which came into effect at the beginning of the year, 2021 is beginning to make people in marriages to rethink the divorce option as they consider the prospects of paying hefty handouts to the partners they seek to separate from.
However, research in the next few years would determine if the law may have any restrictions on the divorce rate.
