Ogun State governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has reacted to the arrest in the United States of his aide, Abidemi Rufai on his alleged involvement in an unemployment benefits fraud.

The governor described the development as disturbing and ordered his immediate suspension from office.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG had reported the arrest at the JFK Airport in New York of Rufai over the allegation of his involvement in wire fraud to the tune of $350,000.

He is due for bail hearing on Wednesday.

The governor’s reaction articulated by his Chief Press Secretary, Kunle Somorin read thus:

“The Ogun State governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has received the very disturbing news of the arrest of one of his political appointees, Mr Abidemi Rufai, in New York over alleged unemployment benefits fraud in the United States.

“In view of the gravity of these allegations, the Governor has ordered the immediate suspension of the accused appointee.

“The Governor wishes to restate his commitment to an open, transparent, accountable and morally upright Administration and will not condone any act bordering on criminality by anyone.”

Rufai who is an aide of Governor Abiodun was arrested last Friday at JFK Airport in New York on a criminal complaint charging him with wire fraud.

He was alleged to have stolen over $350,000 in unemployment benefits from the Washington State Employment Security Department, according to the Acting U.S. Attorney Tessa M. Gorman.

Rufai, aka Sandy Tang, 42, of Lekki, Nigeria, made his initial appearance Saturday May 15, 2021 in New York.

He is scheduled for a detention hearing on Wednesday.

The decision of Governor Abiodun to suspend the aide over involvement in the alleged fraud is bound to calm nerves in the state.
