No ‘Right-Thinking’ Nigerian Will Support Igbo For President In 2023 – Ex Buhari Aide, Confidant

Igbo President

A former senior aide and close political ally of President Muhammadu Buhari, Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila has said that no right-thinking Nigerian would vote for an Igbo as President in 2023 given what he claimed as the spate of violence in the region.

Sumaila served as President Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant to the National Assembly between 2015 and 2019 and is also known as one of Buhari’s closest political allies. He was believed to have been Buhari’s preferred aspirant for governor of Kano State in 2015 but Buhari who was still a candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC had to subjugate his desire to Governor Rabiu Kwankwanso’s preference for Abdullahi Ganduje.

Sumaila in a press statement on Thursday also challenged Southeast and indeed Southern leaders to speak against the violence in the Southeast for their desire for political ascendancy in Abuja to be reckoned with.

“With these atrocities committed by the South-East people on record, how can Nigerians entrust them to govern us? I am sure not a single right-thinking Nigerian will endanger his life to support the candidature of any South-East politician contesting for presidency come 2023 general elections,” he said.

Noting that the purpose of the attacks in the Southeast is to create a state of anarchy, he said that “the perpetrators of the attacks must understand that if the country is turned chaotic, then nobody including the perpetrators can escape”.

While charging Southeast political leaders to publicly denounce the attacks in the region, he said:

“The elite in the South-East should borrow a leaf from their northern counterparts such as Arewa Consultative Forum and Northern Elders Forum, who have been persistently condemning the activities of Boko Haram fighters and bandits in the North,” he said in thrashing suggestions of an Igbo emerging as president of Nigeria in 2023.

The assertion is bound to be a challenge for Southeast political leaders in the APC who have said that the party is their best route for the Igbo in the country to get the presidency.
