APC Hits Obaseki Over Lack Of Water In Edo
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State has rejected the excuse by the Governor Godwin Obaseki government for his failure to address the water challenges in Edo Central and other parts of the state, describing it as unbearable and unacceptable.
The Edo State governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki at the weekend said his administration has in the last five years focused on water supply and saw no reason why Edo people should not enjoy public water supply supplied in their homes.
In a statement released by the Edo APC spokesman Chris Azebamwan, he said what is baffling is that for Edo Central, the Federal government, as far back as 2018, completed and handed over the Northern Esan water supply scheme, in Ugboha, Edo Central Senatorial District to the Edo State government.
He said the Water scheme designed to cover much of the senatorial district to the Edo State government was estimated to have cost N3.85 billion and was supposed to generate two million gallons or nine million liters of water per day.
Chris Azebamwan said the project was initiated by the Federal Government, which expected that in no distant time, the state government would carry out the Reticulation aspect of the scheme, so the people of Edo Central can have potable water.
He recalled that in September 2019, the Edo state government publicly declared that a water reticulation project as part of the scheme was nearing completion as it has concluded the training of communities to set up water associations while it planned metering the water from the plant to regulate usage and check leakages.
The APC spokesperson wondered why close to three years, no drop of water is available from this water scheme and to any home in the catchment area, and said the Edo state government should admit that it has failed on this score instead of making promises of how it plans to erect giant boreholes and lay pipes for the same purpose.
He said, “The people of the affected areas are tired of Governor Obaseki’s promises and having suffered for too long, waiting for water, the best the government can do is to take action instead of gallivanting and claiming to be inspecting the water projects.
“There are practical options to make water available and affordable to Edo people and as a party, which has the welfare and overall well-being of Edo people as the overriding interest, the APC is willing and ready to give Governor Obaseki the blueprint for a viable and sustainable water supply scheme for Edo State”, he concluded.
