Ibrahim Badamasi Babaginda (IBB), former head of state, says Nigeria’s next president must be an empathetic and compassionate character that does not shy away from addressing the citizens.

Speaking with Arise TV on Friday, The former military ruler said Nigeria’s next president must speak to the citizens, have goods grasp of economics, and have must be broadminded with friends in every region.

Babangida said he has seen Nigerians who possess this qualities he listed, adding that such persons are in their sixties.

“If you get a good leadership that links with the people and tries to talk with the people; not talking on top of the people, then we would be okay,” he said.

“I have started visualising a good Nigerian leader. That is, a person who travels across the country and has a friend virtually everywhere he travels to, and he knows at least one person that he can communicate with.

“That is a person, who is very versed in economics and is also a good politician, who should be able to talk to Nigerians and so on. I have seen one, or two or three of such persons already in his sixties. I believe so if we can get him.”

Babangida’s picture of what Nigeria’s Next President must look like and the qualities he must possess are believed to be a parting swipe at president Muhammadu Buhari and his government.

Babangida ideal president is a stark contrast to the personae of Buhari who has been largely aloof and indifferent to the plight of the citizenry, the economy has been on a downward spiral as raging food inflation and foreign exchange crunch depletes purchasing power of Nigerians.

Also, the sovereignty and territory integrity of the country has been gravely threatened with emergence of secessionist groups and perennial insecurity.
