Taiwo Awoniyi inspired Union Berlin to a 2-1 victory, scoring a brace against former club Mainz in the Bundesliga

In a first-half bereft of clear cut chances, Mainz took the lead through Ingvartsen in the 40th minute

Awoniyi who had gone three league games without a goal showed his high confidence level when he pounced on a Max Kruse pass to drag Union Berlin back on equalled terms in the 70th minute.

Awoniyi was on hand to double his tally four minutes later, sealing a comeback to send Union Berlin 2-1 up.

The goal has seen Awoniyi hit his last season’s goal tally with a host of matches left, showing his impact in front of goal this season.

Awoniyi also rounded up the day with more great news, receiving a call up to the Super Eagles squad, ahead of their Qatar 2022 World Cup Qualifiers against the CAR, replacing the injured Lorient striker, Terem Moffi.

Awoniyi has now bagged five goals in seven Bundesliga games for Union Berlin, and one goal in the Europa Conference League in two appearances.
